How serious is a hernia?

The most frequent location for a hernia is the stomach area. The abdominal wall is a sheet of muscles and tendon that runs down from rib to legs. The most common function is that it holds the abdominal contents, primarily the intestine. If a weakness opens up in the wall the intestine is pushed through the opening. The resultant bulge which is often quite visible against the skin is Hernia.

This window of weakness generally occurs where there is a natural weakness in out abdominal wall. The umbilical area is a prone area of natural weakness which is very frequent for a hernia.

An understanding Hernia

Mostly the hernias do not cause pain. Paradoxically the larger one often hurt less, the reason being that a large window in the abdominal wall permits the intestine to slide without causing much pain. Pain tends to have been associated with something getting squeezed, which is often in the case with the smaller hernias. Both of them often requires being operated as soon as possible. If left such intestine untreated will strangulate and tend to cause the longest post-operative pain. So hernia has to be fixed as you know about it.

Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs use an instrument called the laparoscope. There are two or four small incisions made in the abdominal wall through which a laparoscope is passed which is a thing telescope with light at the end. Also, the surgical instruments are passed through it. The incision is small so the whole technique is often called Keyhole surgery, which is different than the conventional Open surgery. Such Laparoscopic hernia surgery is also widely called minimally invasive surgery Hernia surgery.

A hernia is then viewed from inside the abdomen from another side of the abdominal wall. the abdominal cavity is inflated with the help of the carbon dioxide gas to provide space to the surgeon to work inside the body of the patients. The actual operating is done remotely with the long instrument by the surgeon. The hernia imperfection or hole is often covered with the mesh from within the abdomen and stapled into the muscles in order to fix the patch.

Laparoscopy Removal of Hernia

We have always come across people complaining about the pain in the abdomen due to a hernia, mostly from people who are aged. When we cross that boundary of youthfulness to middle age, then it is time to worry about a hernia. As age catches up the process of building up and breaking down of muscles and tissues go out of balance. As a result of this imbalance, the muscles or tissues weaken causing weak spots in the area. A hernia occurs when organs push through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds its place.

Causes for the occurrence of Hernia

Many reasons can be cited for the occurrence of a hernia.
1) Aging.
2)  Lifting heavy weight.
3) Obesity.
4) Persistent coughing and sneezing.
5) Constipation.
6) Heredity.
Apart from natural causes, Damage from injuries or surgery can also result in the occurrence of a hernia.

Types and symptoms

The most common types of a hernia are:
1) An inguinal hernia which affects the intestine. This condition accounts for most of the cases of a hernia.
2) The other types which are not very common include an incisional hernia, femoral hernia, umbilical hernia and hiatal hernia.

Treatment of a hernia

The doctor before going for the surgery monitors a hernia and suggests lifestyle changes to reduce weight and advises the patient to quit smoking. The patient is also advised to remove spicy food from his diet. If the symptoms don’t recede then the patient might need a surgery.

Laparoscopic treatment to remove a hernia

Laparoscopy is more preferred than open surgery as it uses modern technology. It is easy to handle, less damaging and the recovery time is also less. In laparoscopy, a small incision is made to insert the equipment, a tiny high-resolution camera and miniaturized surgical equipment to repair a hernia. Still some types of a hernia will require open surgery.

Gallstones in the bile duct may not cause symptoms for several months or even years. The following are the symptoms of bile duct stones:
  • Severe abdominal pain in the right upper or middle upper abdomen.
  • Fever
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Clay-colored stools
There are two main types of gallstones: cholesterol gallstones and pigment gallstones. Cholesterol Gallstones appear yellow in color and are the most common type of gallstone. The cholesterol stones are caused by bile which contains:
  • Too much cholesterol
  • Too much bilirubin
  • Not enough bile salts
  • If the gallbladder does not empty completely or often enough.
The cause of Pigment Stones is not properly known. They seem to occur in mostly when:
  • Cirrhosis of the liver.
  • Infections in the bile duct.
  • Hereditary blood disorders due to which the liver makes too much bilirubin.
Treating gallstones in the bile duct mainly focuses on relieving the blockage. These treatments may include complete stone extraction, fragmentation of stones, surgery for the removal of the gallbladder and stones, surgery that makes a cut into the common bile duct to remove the stones, biliary stenting etc.
